In poorer communities, food consumption patterns are more likely to include inexpensive  and  unhealthy foods and it is more difficult to obtain healthy food options in poorer communities. Poor nutrition  results in  increased risk  of various health conditions, from diabetes to food poisoning. In addition, the excessive costs of medical treatment may discourage individuals from seeking preventative care.

These stressors, over time, can negatively impact mental health and often exacerbate existing conditions. ad Addressing poverty also means finding a treatment or cure for an underlying mental illness.
